There are many traditions at Christmas, some of them global (like presents) and some of them more personal (sssh). And then there are the ones you look forward to doing – and for me one of them is the Christmas Rocktacular.

It’s the same drill as before, always unsigned, unknown or unforgettable artists, but now with a little extra helping of the festive season. And an extra special extended edition of the show.

One of the gigs I was most looking forward to during the recent Edinburgh Fringe was the short run show in the last week of Rachael Sage, an artist I was introduced to last year and have continued to bump into around the world. It says something when in front of a packed house the cry from the stage goes up “is that you? Did you bring me chocolate?”

Anyway Sage’s latest album, Delancey Street hit the UK stores last week, and that gives me the perfect reason to do one of the occasional “TPN Rock Sessions” with Rachael.

So the biggest live music festival on the planet (err, depending on how you count it!) is over. Irrespective of the nit-picking, South by Southwest brings thousands of bands and tens of thousands of music fans to the city of Austin for five days of music, mayhem and millions of CD’s and samplers being thrown at the press.

To be honest, I had no room to bring them all home, so ripping the CD’s to the PC and then passing them on to a good home (Chris and Cherie) it’s time to sift through them in a little SXSW retrospective.

And now for something a little bit special. Just as I released this years TPN Rock Christmas Rocktacular, fellow podcaster  C. C. Chapman released his Holiday Special on Accident Hash. After listening to it (and spotting one or two tracks we had both chosen independently) I cast my mind to the joint Accident Mash shows CC and I occasionally do.

While it was waaaaay too short notice to put together a joint Christmas Show, I suggested to C. C. that:

I have been looking forward to this show for some time now. For the third year, it’s time for a holiday special from TPN Rock. Yes, here we go with the Christmas Rocktacular for 2009.

Christmas music is a strange time for podcasters and music. We can’t officially play tracks like Fairytale of New York, and so much of Christmas music (certainly for me and my family) is based around feeling familiar, which provides an extra challenge when looking for new music. But hey, the last few weeks I’ve been nudging artists and bands to see what they have for this time of year and every one of them has stepped up with some fantastic music.

And when I sat down to record this show, there was a tiny kid inside me, who’s voice got steadily louder. Christmas is coming… Christmas is coming… Christmas is coming…

You can read the full story behind this track on Dave Slusher’s Blog, but when Dave emailed me this morning to say that “the song is up” there was no way I was holding this back till Friday.

Okay to summarise, last year at Dragon*Con Dave saw something that made him want to write a song. He needed a McSanity test to ensure his Scottish character sounded Scottish and asked me to do a pass over the lyrics. Which I did.

It’s a special day around the world, as America gets ready to welcome their 44th President, Barack Obama. So that meant that CC Chapman and I knew this was going to be a very special episode of our joint show Accident Mash.

Recorded yesterday (Martin Luther King day), and aired today means there’s a lot of hope and optimism in the air, not that there isn’t when CC and I get together to record a joint show of TPN Rock and Accident Hash. This is close to an hour and a half, there’s a lot more talking between the tracks, and the tracks are some of the best we can both find.

…as for the songs, if we didn’t know the playlist when we started, then neither will you. Just kick back and let the good times roll.

It all started at a remarkably late hour on the last night of the Portable and New Media 2007, in the bar of the Ontario Marriot, with Linda Mills asking us why CC and I hadn’t done one of the most irregular podcast music shows of all time, The TPN Rock / Accident Hash joint show, Accident Mash. In the fifteen or so months its been running, we’ve done… three. Neither of us had even considered setting up a time to do one, given the hectic nature of the Expo and the sheer volume of people to talk to.

But we both got a glint in our eyes, stared at each other over the bar, and proclaimed “we can do this!”

Just five minutes later and we’ve rounded up some of the leading podsafe music artists in the world, MacGyvered together a twin-track mixing desk with some tie pins, cables, stub mics, headphone splitters and my trusty minidisc recorder – and then rather loudly let everyone know that we’d be recording, the artists would be singing, and everyone was invited to where else but the home of all the improv events at the PME… poolside at the Marriot.

There’s a lot of crowd noise in this one – not surprising with such a fantastic and appreciative audience (thank you EVERYONE who was there, and to everyone who missed it, you’re going to be kicking yourself for the rest of your life…). With the local constabulary lurking in the background watching the noise levels, half the hosting duties were taken up by crowd control and keeping the volume down. But hey, this is as live, as raw, and as honest a gig as you are ever going to find. People who love music playing, listening, talking, and participating.

We’ve got accapella; we’ve got beat boxing; we’ve got accoustic; we’ve got group jamming; but what else would you expect from some of the leading independent musicans? We’ve got crowd participation; we’ve got old and new friends in the crowd; we’re on a runaway train where the hosts honestly have no idea what’s happening in the next thirty seconds, let alone for the rest of the show.

Folks, it was an honour to capture all your joy and enthusiam in what Eric Rice named “The Accident Ssssh.” I hope you’ll listen back with fond memories of friendship, community and the pioneer spirit that really does sum up what podcasting is and how it can change the world. And thanks to podcasting, this special recording session is here for us all to share with the rest of the world.

Well, almost the full session – we’ve had to trim out the non-podsafe music that we played as we can’t ‘publish’ that through our RSS Feeds; but don’t fret. While we can’t get clearance to send them down the internet, what CC and I are investigating (with help from Brian Ibbot) is a Christmas DVD of Accident Mash#4 for charity, with the raw and edited audio, and all the video and pictures everyone took of the event. That’s actually easier to sort out than a podcast appearance (insert rolled eyes here).

Turns out some of you got the wrong link in the RSS for last Friday’s show, here’s the corrected one (and the original post is updated as well)

And here we are, crossing over the arbitary mark that is one hundred shows. It’s not really a 100, with all the Rock Agains, the different Monday features, and the occasional Session (I hope you all liked Koopa’s session on Monday!) the number of TPN Rock shows are well over 220 shows, but then, time for a little bit of a party, like we need a excuse to let our hair down here!

Those of you watching the music charts may well recall that back in January this year, long before Bum Rush the [iTunes] Charts, a young band from Colchester, Essex, became the first unsigned band to reach the UK Top 40. Not a store chart, or a local hit parade, but the honest to god, national, officially recognized Top 40. Reaching number 31, Koopa (for that is the band) did what we all thought would happen at some point. But they did it first!

So congrats to them for that, and also for not sitting back on that first. The ‘tricky second single’ has been released today, so I thought that it would be nice to honor both their previous success, and showcase them a little bit more, and offer them only the third TPN Rock Session.
